I really wanted to make a painting with the movement and energy of dance, but with a more intimate feel. I don’t like it when anything in my work feels too ‘performative’ - like it was made for us. Instead, I prefer the moments that feel like we aren’t supposed to see them. Oddly, adding the dog introduces a question that helps achieve this. Are they going out? Have they just come home? Or did they simply get dressed up to dance in their kitchen because it makes them, and clearly their dog, very happy? The answer isn’t as important as the feeling, and the feeling is good.
